The Church of God cherishes the liberty of free thought as an essential condition for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. However, there are certain fundamental truths taught such as God's Ten Words (commandments) and Jesus' testimony which are binding upon all of God's children. Therefore, these Words and teachings we affirm as the fundamental principles of the Christian faith.

  1. POLITY

The Church of God is historically autonomous. Each church was given the freedom of managing its own financial affairs. But Jesus is "the head over all things to the church." Every church cooperates as "one body" and "one mind" in Christ. "There shall be one flock and one shepherd." (John 10:16)

  2. THE BIBLE

The Bible, including both the Old and New Testaments, contains the revelation of God's Word given to mankind through the prophets and the Son of God, Jesus the Christ. (Romans 15:4; John 6:68; 17:17; II Timothy 3:15).

  3. GOD

There is only one true God, our heavenly Father, who is the eternal and supreme deity alone (Exodus 3:13, 14). He is omnipotent in His wisdom, love and power, the Creator of heaven and earth. (Genesis 1:1; Isaiah 40:28; I Timothy 1:1; Psalm 90:2).

  4. JESUS

As the first century Christians believed, we also believe in the humanitarianism of Jesus, the Christ of God. In other words, Jesus was not divine and he was tempted as all men are (God cannot be tempted).  He came from a natural birth, having been born from the copulation of a husband and wife, Joseph and Mary. And he, Jesus, was descended from the kingship line of David through Joseph's seed. The virgin-birth myth was always a strong belief among the heathen long before the time of Jesus. We believe that Jesus is the world's only Christ ('Anointed') of God, who was chosen of God, by being endowed with the holy Spirit (Word) without measure due to his faith and obedience towards the Will of God the Father, even unto death. (Psalms 2:17; Hebrews 1:5; 5:5; Mark 1:9 to 11)

  5. HOLY SPIRIT

The promised comforter, the Spirit of truth, which is the agency of the Father, referred to also in scripture as that power which proceeds forth from the Father by the means of His Word. (John 1:1; Psalm 104:30; 139:7; John 14:26)

  6. DEATH AND MORTALITY

Mankind by nature, is mortal. He is a creature formed of the dust of the ground who at death loses all consciousness and returns to the dust of the ground. (Genesis 3:19)  Death is that condition of total unconsciousness that occurs to all persons, the just and the unjust, a condition that all the dead remains in until the first fruits of the resurrection occurs at Christ's coming.  In death, thoughts of love and hatred cease. (Ecclesiastes 9:5,6; Job 14:12; Psalm 115:7; 146:1 to 4)

  7. JESUS' CRUCIFIXION AND HIS RESURRECTION

The time Jesus spent in the tomb (sepulchre) was three days and three nights, with each day and night representing a 24-hour period (John 11:9).  He was placed in the tomb before sundown late on Wednesday afternoon and was resurrected by the power of God at the end of the Sabbath [Saturday]. (Matthew 12:40).  Note that Jesus was laid in the tomb on the 'preparation day' before the 'high Sabbath'  which relates to the Passover. (John 19:31)  The term 'high Sabbath' was not used in conjunction with the weekly seventh-day Sabbath and could fall on any day of the week, so in this case, it would have been a Wednesday according to our modern calendar. (Mark 15:42; Luke 23:54; John 19:31, 42)

  8. RESURRECTION

The resurrection of the righteous dead occurs at Christ's return at which time they receive eternal life, while the wicked, at their appointed time, will suffer the complete extinction of being. This is the second death. (John 5:28, 29; Job 14:14, 15; I Corinthians 15:13 to 22)

  9. THE SECOND COMING

The return of Jesus to this earth will be literal, visible and in bodily form at God's appointed time. (Acts 1:11; Matthew 25:31; I Thessalonians 4:16)

  10. THE ASSEMBLY NAME

The common biblical name of God's church is the "Church of God" and that church is established upon the foundation of the apostles with Jesus the Christ being the chief corner stone. (Acts 20:28; I Corinthians 15:9; Galatians 1:13)  Note that the inclusion of the name 'Christianos' is merely to distinguish ourselves from other churches who call themselves "Church of God" but whose teachings differ from what we understand of the teachings of Jesus the Christ.

  11. THE SAINTS

The saints of God are named after the name of God's anointed being called "Christian" which means "Christ follower" or "Christ believer" (Acts 11:26; I Peter 4:16; Acts 26:28)

  12. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

We are to keep all ten commandments, including the 7th day Sabbath, to inherit eternal life. If we break any one of these commandments, we are guilty of breaking them all. (Exodus 20:1 to 17; Deuteronomy 9:10; Matthew 5:17; I John 5:3; Romans 3:20; James 2:10)

  13. JESUS' TESTIMONY

We are instructed by scripture that the saints shall not only observe the commandments of God, but also the testimony (teachings) of Jesus, the Christ of God. (Revelations 12:17; 14:12)

  14. REPENTANCE

Repentance precedes baptism by belief in the Christ and repentance of past sins. Before baptism, you must have the desire of repentance and if you have done wrong to a brother or sister, reconcile that wrong with open repentance. (Acts 26:20; II Corinthians 7:9, 10; Luke 17:3, 4)

  15. BAPTISM

Through baptism we enter into a covenant with God through Jesus the Christ. It is a symbol of death to sin -- we are buried by complete immersion and raised again (resurrected) with the pledge to walk in the "newness of life" in the Christ. (Acts 2:38; Romans 6:3 to 6)

  16. THE LORD'S SUPPER

Commemorates the death of our Lord, Jesus the Christ "till he comes". It is a memorial that we are commanded to hold yearly on the 14th day of Nisan (Abib) with unleavened bread and the "fruit of the vine", which represents the broken body and the shed blood of Jesus. (Luke 22:19, 20; I Corinthians l l:23 to 26)

  17. FOOT WASHING

This is held in connection with the Lord's Supper, being an act of humility among the brethren and sisters. (John 13:4 to 17)

  18. MARRIAGE

A holy ordinance instituted by God with one partner for life. When entering the body of the Christ, all members should abide by the sacred institution of marriage. Only upon the death of one of the partners is the other permitted to remarry. (Matthew 19:3 to 6; Mark 10:11,12: Luke 16:18; I Corinthians 7:10, 11)

  19. CARNAL WARFARE

We, as Christians, stand opposed to carnal warfare on the basis that war is contrary to the teachings of God and Jesus.  Killing in any form, is against the law of God. (Exodus 20:13; Matthew 26:52; Revelations 13:10; Genesis 9:6)

  20. OFFERINGS AND DONATIONS

Freewill giving of our offering and donations is the practice of the New Covenant church as instituted by God's Christ. The Church of God opposes the practice of being made to give by an obligatory system such as the Levitical tithing system.  Giving should come from a willing and loving heart. (I Corinthians 16:1,2; II Corinthians 9:7)

  21. MEDIATOR

There is only one mediator between God and man, and that is the man, Jesus of Nazareth the Christ of God. (John 14:6; I Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 12:24).
